Step into one of South Africa’s most powerful historical landmarks.
Located just off the coast of Cape Town, Robben Island is a place of deep historical significance and reflection. From 1836 to 1931, the island was used as a leper colony. In the 20th century, it became known as a high-security prison for political prisoners during apartheid.
Notable prisoners included Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Tokyo Sexwale, Govan Mbeki, Dennis Brutus, and Robert Sobukwe. During its time as a prison, security was extremely tight, and the island was closed to almost all civilians, including fishermen.
Today, Robben Island stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of resilience, courage, and the journey to freedom.
